Reflecting on First Assessment Experience – Working in a Group

Our first assessment was for the Unit- Introduction in to Higher Education: Fashion Buying and Merchandising. It was to put together a collaborative presentation lasting no more than 10 minutes on a specific ‘parent company’.

We chose our groups on the second week of being at university. I was in a group made of five girls, who were all really nice and I could tell we were all determined to do well. The ‘parent company’ we got given was ‘The H&M Group’. I really enjoyed our first assessment it was exciting getting to know new people and researching into new areas of fashion.

The hardest part of this assignment was working as a team. Teamwork was hard because it involves relying on other people to put the work in and do their part. I found we all worked at different speeds so it was important to try your hardest to do the work on time. I also found everyone researches the work differently and presents their findings in different ways so it was important to come together to gather the information neatly.

Its also hard because you have to arrange set times to meet up when everyone in available. It involves a lot of your own time to go out your way to meet your group. I have leant that it doesn’t always work out when you arrange to meet up as plans change and people can cancel. It is important to keep your group your priority and if plans change then make the most of what you have.

Throughout out the task we found that communication was key. We set up a WhatsApp group chat which we used to arrange times to meet up and to ask any questions we had. We also used it to feedback after meetings and make sure everyone new what they had to do before the next meeting.

Although, it was tough working in a group it was also rewarding. Working in a group was good because you could get advice and help on what you were doing by people who knew exactly what you needed to do. You could ask your group for feedback on the work you had done so you could make sure it was the best it could be.

Another reason why working in a team was good was because we were able to practise together and therefore could give each other constructive feedback on how to improve. It also meant we could practise in front of each other making us more confident for when we actually did the assessment.

Overall, I did enjoy working as a group and it was good because we all have different strengths and weaknesses and when we came together it meant we were stronger. Working as a group made me more confident in my work and in my presenting.

Reflective T-Shirt Design

Last week in our ISHE Seminar we were asked to design a T-Shirt. The design of the T-Shirt had to be a message about ‘who you are and what you want others to know about you’.

So for my T-Shirt design I decided to create a Mnemonic about my name ‘ABI’. Three simple words that descried my personality and feelings about starting my university experience in London. You can see the T-Shirt design in the picture below:

T-Shirt Design

A is for ACTIVE

I have always been an athletic person. I use to train and compete for my local running club, Stratford-upon-Avon. I have competed in 400m, 800m and cross country for my club and my county (Warwickshire). I was also involved in my sixth form netball team and since moving to London I have joined the UAL netball team. I am thoroughly enjoying being part of the UAL netball team, it has given me the opportunity to meet new people and continue to keep active. I am happy to tell people that I am an active person, I believe it is a big part of my personality.

B is for BUBBLY

I am an enthusiastic person, at the moment I am excited about living in London, meeting new people and learning new skills at university. There has been so much change that has happened over the last few weeks, meaning there is loads of opportunities. Making new friends and exploring London with them is very exciting, being in London has made me full of high spirits.

I is for INSPIRED

I have been inspired a lot by moving to London and starting University. Moving to London is so different to home as there is always so much going on. I love being able to explore such a vibrant and electric city. I have so far done loads of sightseeing, shopping, visited exhibitions and been to the theatre. Starting university has also inspired me lots. I am loving the course and really enjoy being able to study a subject I find interesting. I am currently inspired to learn more, enjoy this city and succeed in my degree.

Reflecting My First Few Days at LCF

UAL -High Holborn

Entering the induction at LCF on Thursday 1st October 2015, was a nerve-racking but exciting experience. I hadn’t met any other students in my halls studying Fashion Buying and Merchandising so I was completely oblivious to the sort of people I would be studying with. There were many questions going through my head; How would the other students be feeling? What would a lecture be like? Would the tutors be nice?

When I arrived at the High Holborn building I was greeted and directed by a member of staff, giving me the impression from the start I was joining a friendly and welcoming department. After signing in and heading to the lecture theatre I quickly became aware that we were all in the same situation. Meeting a few of the other students on my course made many of my personal worries and concerns disappear.

Entering the lecture theatre for the first time was a new and exciting experience. I was very interested to find out more about the course and to meet the course team. The introduction talk was really well organised, it gave me the right amount of information about what to expect from the course, about LCF and how to get help from all the areas. The question and answer session was really good. I enjoyed working with new people, getting to know them and making new friends. Being able to ask the panel questions worked well as many of the questions were very similar to my own so being able to hear all the answers was helpful. In the second half of the day we participated in group activities. We headed out to London to complete the various challenges we had to do. This was a good way getting to know more of the students on our course as well as getting to know London.

On Friday 2nd October our second day of induction we meet our course leaders. The course leaders were all very experienced in the industry and were all engaging speakers. They talked us through the course, I found this really useful and interesting as it is good to know what to expect and how we will be marked. Learning about the course and meeting the tutors made me really excited to start the lectures properly.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the induction days, meeting new people, learning about all the facilities LCF has to offer and finding out in depth what the course included. I am now excited to start the next 4 years as a student at LCF.
